Character Name; BJ Hunnicutt
Canon; M*A*S*H -with the character page http://mash.wikia.com/wiki/B.J._Hunnicutt here!
Canon Point; s7e25, “The Party”
Age; time is wobbly and he arrived at the 4077th at 28 (according to a few sources), so can we say early thirties? I like early thirties.
House; Freya
Power; Charm
Personality; BJ is a man who wants to return home knowing he did the best that he could under the circumstances, with his head held high and with his arms outstretched to embrace his wife and child the very moment he lays eyes on them again. He has his principles and his moral compass is no secret. He's reluctant in his role of draftee Army surgeon but he puts in long shifts alongside his companions and acts as a steady source of good sense.
You know, for the most part.
BJ Hunnicutt is easily described as easy-going. He's the placid prankster, the level-headed observer, the mild-mannered counselor. He's the kind of guy who would take the day to lovingly describe a sight from home to the homesick, who would talk all day about how he remembers the day he took the picture of his baby girl that sticks in his wallet. He's friendly from the first time he appears on screen- tidy, excited (not in the gee willikers I get to be in a war! kind of sense- more like the I can't believe I'm suddenly in a war way), polite. The charming couple who greeted the freshly arrived Captain were distressed and BJ promptly and eagerly asks if there's anything he can do to help. He worries over losing a piece of his uniform, worries over sneaking in an enlisted man into an Officers Club, and from that first meeting onward we get to learn that BJ isn't as dead-set against rules and regulations the way his friend Hawkeye is. BJ lets his comfort zone be known well ahead of any time he suspects it may have to be crossed or otherwise blurred. While he's strongly against any injustices, he goes about dealing with a way to fix things that is much calmer than Hawkeye. He seldom rushes into heavy decisions and will always caution against diving into a deep issue simply because they can. BJ prefers to take some time to think matters over, the benefits and consequences both.
BJ is not by any means an aggressive man. He's friendly towards strangers, has an excellent and professional bedside manner with his patients, and despite being a tad on the quiet side (compared to a certain roommate) he loves to pop into conversations with whatever zinger he can think up. BJ is great at diffusing tensions, at being a calming presence. All of this said, however, he's obviously not a perfect man. His patience is nearly inexhaustible but after a long day and a lot of pestering over inane things, he'll be prone to raise his voice and snap at someone to shut up. He is nearly obsessive with the health of his patients (not exactly a terrible quality to have in the circumstances) and will brood when he can't help matters any longer.
He doesn't seem to understand how it is that not everyone can feel the pain he does at not being able to be with his family- he'll mourn the fact constantly. He'll offer unsolicited advice and at times he'll speak his mind more bluntly than tactfully when around friends which might earn him an occasional scolding or cold shoulder. BJ has a wonderful sense of duty to the 4077th, but there are times when he'll find himself distracted from being a doctor by the fact that he'd rather be a father- once he nearly ran himself ragged and ran the unit mad when he tried to be a sort of surrogate father to a Korean family, and failed.
Which brings us to the fact that BJ's pride stems from his need to be with a family- to be a part of one. He religiously reads and rereads any letter his wife writes him until it drives his roommates up the walls. He's heavily impacted by each and every word he reads of his wife Peg's handwriting- his mood changing in an instant if just one word to him seems off. He loves his wife dearly, loves his infant daughter Erin just as much, and he lets the world know it. BJ shows us he has very traditional family values and that he's not ashamed of admitting it- it's a hefty blow to his pride at any instance Peggy writes of any simple problem she came across back home. It hurts BJ to know his wife now doesn't have him there to magically fix all of her problems. BJ is a homesick mess any day he misses an important celebration- Erin's birthday, his wedding anniversary. He scales his misery back some if he's ever called out on it, though, and trudges on with his duty.
While BJ isn't exactly adventurous or daring, he did pick up the habit of practical pranking to get over the horrific tedium of wartime. He can hold his own against the best of them, can think up a witty retort to any complaint, and simply loves peace. He has a natural fondness for children and it's rare to see him without a small and meek smile at least, despite everything. He's a loyal friend and hates to see anyone he loves in trouble or about to make a bad decision and he'll sacrifice agreeability to try and talk sense into anyone. BJ is a skilled surgeon and a guy you can't go wrong confiding in. He's not quick to judge and doesn't hold a grudge and after everything he's been through and seen, he's content to sit back and count the victories over the defeats, and count down the days until the war ends.

Network Sample; [The man's not quite dejected, mind you, but there's the unmistakable air about him that suggests that he's missing something. The joke, maybe. The punchline. The 'real' explanation to all this, because this wasn't how he had expected his day to end. Being a doctor meant rolling with the punches, of course, and soon the captain is squaring his shoulders and lifting his head and giving a polite little grin. Right. Now to see this communication device in action. --heck, BJ even waves.]
Hello. I, uh, think I took a wrong turn somewhere because... this isn't Korea, and if I was dreaming I sure wouldn't be dreaming of Asgard. No offense meant to the Asgardians, but it's a little farther from home than I like to let my mind stray. [And with the first problem out in the open, he even seems to relax.]
But from everything that I've been told, I've gathered that going home is going to be a challenge. To say the least. Here I thought one war was bad enough at keeping me away. Anyway, I've been told that I'm here to stay. And I guess getting to know each other is something that will happen sooner or later so I thought a little introduction wouldn't do any harm. Hello. [Again- friendlier this time, not that the first time was lacking the sentiment, but at the very least the word now rolls off more casually, warmer. He'd apologize, but he figures that a hostage having a lot on their minds is pretty normal stuff around here. So he just continues.] I'm Captain BJ Hunnicutt. More important than rank, though, is the fact that I'm a doctor. Much more important, actually. I'm a- a surgeon. And I like to help, and would like to help wherever I'm needed. If anyone that's been here longer than an hour can point me in the right direction, I'd be very thankful. Thanks.
Log Sample; It wasn't fair, but then again, none of this was. For anybody. And hey, at least this time it's not a hard and lumpy cot he's being forced to sleep on, but an actual bed in an actual castle. The thought brought some relief to a gloomy mind- BJ even huffed out a small breath of a laugh when he could nearly swear his back muscles relaxed at the moment. Mind over body- that was a simple mantra back in training, much harder to keep close to the heart at the moment when BJ was sure he was in a fairy-tale world. What could his mind do now? Couldn't it wish up an exit and take him back to the old war he'd grown to know and love? The strolls through the city were always exciting, one way or another. Today BJ couldn't bring himself to notice any stranger to greet and shake hands with, to make small talk with, to ask questions at. No, he just walked along and wondered how fair it was that now he had two wars to fight.
Well- not fight. He wouldn't. To fight against, maybe, but the idea seemed almost too noble for BJ to make a convincing mental grab at.
He bit his bottom lip and wondered about the bracelet- about the magic that was everywhere. His insides felt like they'd turned to worms or caterpillars, not yet butterflies because the feeling wasn't as pleasant. He could, you know, maybe find a Post Office among the-- oh, that was stupid. BJ peered around a corner, his dog tags clinking against each other with the movement. He searched faces in the crowd for once, instead of seeing only unfocused shadows and gaits. These people didn't choose to be where they were. They'd all be gone if they could be, gone somewhere better. It wasn't at that moment that BJ realized he hated war, but the cool wave of admittance rolled over him all the same. So he was stuck. So Erin could wait a little longer. So Peg would have to fight with the home and the neighbors a little longer. So their reunion would be delayed.
But when he went home, BJ told himself, he'd have a hell of a bedtime story.
And it'd all start with, 'when your daddy was lost in another world and he found all his friends....'
Because he couldn't be the only lucky one. He couldn't be.
